Indian Lentil Pumpkin Seed Hummus (Vegan, GF)

This weekend we went up to the cottage to soak up the last weekend of summer. We wanted to make hummus and veggies to eat as a snack on the dock but there were no chickpeas so we substituted green lentils and used pumpkin seed butter instead of tahini and threw in some indian spices and came up with a super delicious dip!

1/2 cup dry green lentils
2 Tbsp pumpkin seed butter (sunflower seed butter works too)
1 clove garlic
1 tsp ginger
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp ground coriander
1/4 tsp cinnamon or garam masala
1/4 tsp cayenne
Salt and pepper

Cook lentils according to package until tender and drain. Puree all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Sprinkle with pumpkin seeds and a dash of cayenne.

Our mom loved it! And the indian spices make it really nutty and flavourful. Don't be afraid to adjust the spices if you like more heat. :)

  1. I made this for a dinner party on Sunday night and it was a HUGE hit. Though I didn't have pumpkin seed butter, so I just kind of made my own in the food processor and it turned out just delish. So glad I have plenty of leftovers for myself!

  2. Excellent idea! I never had chickpeas on hand, but I always have lentils. I am really impressed with the uniqueness of this recipe. I followed the recipe, but I replaced 2 Tablespoons of oil with water.

  4. Looks fabulous! If I don't have pumpkin seed butter, do you think tahini or peanut butter would work, or would you suggest another substitute? Or is pumpkin seed butter really the way to go?

  5. Thanks Katie! We suggest any kind of seed butter as a substitution, so tahini and sunflower seed would work well. I'd stay away from nut butter just because the tatse might over power the indian spices. Hope it turns out!

  6. Made this a few hours ago, with only minor changes (used tahini paste instead of pumpkin butter. Added a tablespoon of finely-ground pumpkin seeds.) SO GOOD. Thank you, ladies.
